You’re hope of Kenya, Uhuru tells youth

President Uhuru Kenyatta today said young people are Kenya’s hope and future and at no time will he allow their destiny to be derailed.

The President said as long as youth strive to serve their communities and the country then the future of Kenya is secured.

“For as long as they remain proudly patriotic, for as long as they stay the course of citizenship — they will ensure that no one ever steals Kenya’s future,” said the President.

The President spoke today when he presided over this year’s passing out parade of the National Youth Service recruits in Gilgil, Nakuru County.

The President noted that in the past one year the National Youth Service and the Kenyan youth in general have faced myriad of challenges but remained resilient in service to the country.

The President said rogue elements who try to subvert the dreams of the Kenyan youth and the future of the country will only be overcome by the resilience of men and women of goodwill.

“They will always be overcome by youth who choose the path of hard work and hope, over the easy path of corruption and sloth,” said President Kenyatta.

He assured that his Government will always support and stand by Kenyans who steer away from corruption.

He said the government appointed new proven leadership to the National Youth Service because the initiative is transforming the fortunes of majority of the country’s youth.

“For as long as I am President, we will support the National Youth Service, and we will invest in the youth.  For those who need a reason: the bright faces of these thousands of young people graduating today are your answer,” he said.

At inception, President Kenyatta said the NYS was founded on the assumption that all citizens — irrespective of age, gender, religious convictions, political affiliation or professional station — had a stake in, and a responsibility for, this country.

“It was hinged on the understanding that citizenship was not merely a right to be presumed, but a sacred trust handed down to us by our forefathers, bought by blood and sweat, and demanding similar, if smaller, individual sacrifices on the part of each generation of custodians,” the President said.

He challenged the recruits to remain focused on the responsibilities and demands of their citizenship as they join other Kenyans in building the nation.

“You will be required to foster unity and understanding among various groups and communities”, the President told them.

Adding, “As you undertake these responsibilities, and as you bear the noble burden of citizenship, you can be rest assured that wherever you go, the values of diligence, responsibility and humility will stand you in good stead and secure your success”.

Deputy President William Ruto, who was also present, said NYS mandate of transforming Kenyan youth has been phenomenal under President Kenyatta’s leadership.

“The opportunity given to thousands of young people from across the country who would otherwise not have had this opportunity to be skilled, to be trained and to assume their places in the transformation of our country is an opportunity that is unique,” said the Deputy President.

The Deputy President said the transformation brought about by the NYS to the youth empowerment programme in the country will be scaled up to benefit hundreds of thousands of Kenyan youth waiting to take their place in the institution.

Public Service, Youth and Gender Affairs Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki said her ministry has undertaken to review NYS training programmes to carter for emerging challenges facing the youth.

She also said her ministry has restructured and rationalized youth programmes and resources to improve on service delivery in the most cost effective and efficient manner.

The CS further said the ministry has done biometric registration of 76,000 youth engaged in community programmes in order to safeguard and ensure better accountability of public resources.

Other speakers included the NYS Director General Richard Ndubai.
