Police stop Besigye from accessing the Electoral Commission offices last year.

Oxfam boss says her husband’s money and other items were taken away by police during his detention at Nagalama police station in Mukono.

Kizza Besigye, Mugisha Muntu, Ingrid Turinawe and Wasswa Birigwa were arrested yesterday in Najjanankumbi while trying to address a press conference.

Police later claimed they had not been detained but taken to their homes.

Winnie wrote on Twitter dismissing the claim and confirming that the opposition officials had been detained at Nagalama police station.

Only Muntu and Besigye, according to Winnie, were released at about 10pm in the night.

This came after US secretary of state, John Kerry, talked to President Yoweri Museveni on phone about the harassment of citizens.

“Kizza Besigye was returned home by force without his shoes, belt, mobile phone and money purse,” Winnie said.

“Police have surrounded our home.”

She said no charges were preferred against them.

“But Ingrid remains in prison. Women should ask why?”

She said the state was engaging in illegality, putting itself above the law and violating human rights of citizens.

According to Winnie, Kerry read President Museveni’s riot act saying popular sovereignty has been violated in this election.

“Please don’t pull the sovereignty card.”
