Oxfam executive director, Winnie Byanyima, says she leaves the country with a heavy heart following the arrest of her husband on Monday.
The FDC candidate, Kizza Besigye, was arrested along Jinja road, briefly detained at Central Police Station in Kampala before being transferred to Kira road police station.
He was later released and escorted to his home in Kasangati.
The retired colonel returned to the city with more vigour than before.
He was however intercepted in Wandegeya, teargased and arrested the second time.
His supporters were also injured in the scuffle with one reported shot by police.
“Leaving with heavy heart,” Winnie tweeted.
“Besigye is arrested, shots and teargas.”
Winnie has been in the country since the weekend when she escorted her husband for the second presidential TV debate held at Serena hotel.
Winnie also escorted Dr Besigye at a rally in Namboole parking, a day to Valentine’s Day.
She has called upon all political parties; NRM, FDC, and Amama Mbabazi’s camp to urgently meet on key issues.
“I know, I am concerned but staying hopeful that Uganda will have a peaceful free and fair election.”
She said election violence is unacceptable.
“No one should die or be maimed because of their political choice.”
