Forum for Democratic Change [FD party president Mugisha Muntu has said naming a Leader of Opposition in Parliament doesn’t mean they accepted losing elections to the ruling party.
Muntu picked Kasese Woman MP Winnie Kiiza on Thursday to lead the opposition in parliament.
He also picked Ibrahim Ssemujju to serve as the opposition chief while Dokolo woman MP Cecilia Ogwal was picked to serve at the Parliamentary Commission.
A section of officials protested the naming of a Shadow Cabinet arguing that it implies FDC is conceding defeat of their candidate Dr. Kizza Besigye by President Yoweri Museveni in the February elections.
At the centre of the fracas is the Secretary for Mobilisation Ingrid Turinawe who is accused of sowing chaos that nearly marred the whole process.
A group of activists on Tuesday raided the party head offices to block the appointment of LoP.
Ingrid later defended the activists saying that party needed to address their grievances.
Outgoing LoP Wafula Oguttu, Budadiri West MP and party secretary general Nandala Mafabi like Ingrid, boycotted the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting that approved the shadow cabinet.
This group was pushing for the rescue of Besigye from Luzira first; they also believe that naming a shadow cabinet means they lost elections to NRM.
Speaking to press, Muntu explained that FDC still doesn’t believe in the presidential election results but had to name a representative in the legislative arm of government.
He has confidence in Kiiza to make the voices of opposition heard in parliament.
“We don’t regret our decision,” Muntu told journalists. “We won the election but were cheated. This doesn’t mean we are conceding defeat to anyone.”
Muntu asked opposition to first cope with what is happening at the moment until the tide of change is in their favour.
He reminded his colleagues that it is Museveni who has control over the army and finances.
Muntu promised to take full responsibility in case appointing a shadow cabinet was a mistake.
Ingrid who serves as a Minister of Internal Affairs said no one can accept defeat on behalf of Besigye.
“Nobody can concede defeat on behalf of any candidate. Nobody. FDC sponsored a candidate but it is or was not a candidate. Not even party president Gen. Muntu or any other leader. Not me, not you.”
She said Dr. Besigye was the candidate in the presidential race and he speaks for himself.
“Ugandans voted him. He won elections and was sworn in. Yes, he is in prison but he will be out soonest. He is our president until he guides us otherwise.”
