South African firefighters are seen on a an Air Canada plane in Johannesburg, South Africa destined for Edmonton Canada

This past weekend, Canada welcomed fire fighters from South Africa – 300 of them.

Air Canada picked them up from Johannesburg, touched down in Barbados to refuel and then flew straight to the Edmonton Airport.

It was quite the scene when the 300 South African fire fighters got off the plane.

They proceeded to sing and dance as many airport people watched on and took pictures or videos of their arrival.

The province of Alberta Canada is one of the biggest producers of oil and natural gas.

The fire in Fort McMurray started on May 1, 2016 (Spring time) and by May 3 it was sweeping through Fort McMurray destroying homes, buildings and forcing an evacuation.  The fire has not stopped.

It is estimated that it has blazed through 580,000 hectares of land and continues to burn.

The current conditions (Summer like, dry) are not helping with the fire fighting.  Rain would make a big difference.

The fire which started in Alberta has now spread into Saskatchewan.

Close to 2,500 fire fighters are battling this monster and the residents of Fort McMurray as well as the businesses are only expected to gradually return home starting this week.

Despite the anticipated return to their homes and businesses, many have been told that their homes are inhabitable.
