Mukono municipality Member of Parliament Betty Nambooze is drafting a bill that seeks to regulate and control the manufacturing, advertising and sale of alcohol in Uganda.
Among others, the bill will set 5pm as opening time for bars in Uganda.
Uganda is ranked number one in terms of alcohol consumption in Africa with a total of 829 million litres of alcohol consumed annually.
In an interview with NBS, Nambooze said the intention of the bill is “to put alcohol as far away as possible from children”.
“It is a shame that Uganda is ranked highly on the continent as far as alcohol consumption is concerned,” Nambooze said.
Nambooze says the The Alcoholic Drinks Control Bill 2016 is not meant to crippled the liquor industry but ensure safety of the children who are influenced to abuse the drink.
According to her, the Enguli Act of 1966 has weak penalties and is not doing what is required.
“I’m the right person to front this bill. I will also be affected because I consume alcohol.”
Nambooze, however, noted that protection of the young and future generation is paramount, the reason she has suggested the bill without fear or favour.
