The Democratic Party President Norbert Mao claims the attack on Gulu Police Station was orchestrated by UPDF soldiers.
The opposition politician told press in Kampala on Tuesday that government is not telling the population the truth hence escalating the conflict.
Mao, a former Gulu chairperson claims the attack was carried out by disgruntled UPDF soldiers from the 4th Division who were “tired of being used as tools”.
“They feel that they are being used like tools. They must be upset.”
The 4th division is commanded by Brig Kayanja Muhanga who Mao says has been begging him to mediate between the gunmen allegedly based in Oyam.
He maintained contrary to police chief Kale Kayihura’s remarks that the attacks were conducted by a gang of vigilantes, UPDF was involved.
He says government must come up with a reconciliation mechanism through which society’s grievances will be handled.
“The NRM government can’t address people as tribes like Baganda, Acholi etc.”
Responding to the claim, army spokesperson Lt Col Paddy Ankunda, said he was disappointed in Mao.
“On Gulu attacks, my old friend Nobert Mao has disappointed me,” Ankunda said.
Ankunda described the attackers as amateurs saying even their commander David Opio had been arrested with his nine accomplices.
“Some people are saying we are staging all this but how come we are arresting even some of our own? Why arrest a major or a colonel?”
“They are acting like gangs. I don’t want to conclude that these attackers belong to a rebel group. They are acting like gangs.”
He said as IGP Kale Kayihura put it, government will not hesitate to take action on those who misuse social media.
“Some of our people on social media must act responsibly. This country is bigger than the things we think we can do.”
