Kigezi Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Gaetano Batanyenda, has finally spoken out on why he blessed President Yoweri Museveni during his rallies in Kabale district on Monday.
The priest who is largely known for criticising Museveni came under fire for blessing the man he has been speaking against.
In defense, Gaetano says as a man of God, he is obliged to bless all people.
In an interview with NTV at his residence in Kabale on Tuesday, Fr. Batanyenda said he prayed for President Museveni to “be a vessel of peace in the country and also repent for his wrong deeds”.
“May be I blessed him [Museveni] so that this blessing might enable him to reconsider his position and stand down,” the priest told the TV.
He added: “And I think in Uganda, many people take president Museveni as a political sinner. So my blessing to him or any other person is for him to repent.”
Gaetano is a member of The Democratic Alliance [TDA], an opposition coalition formed to remove Museveni from power.
Critics now accuse the priest of stabbing opposition in the back by blessing their bitterest enemy.
