Video: Besigye returns to court for mention of treason case

Uganda’s opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye is due in court on June 1, 2016 for the case he has been charged with of treason.

On Wed. May 11, 2016, Dr. Besigye was arrested.  This followed his escape from his home at Kasangati (Kampala area).

He eluded the heavy military police around his home and ended up in downtown Kampala.  Soon, videos and pictures of him being down town Kampala hit Social Media and went viral.

At the same time, a video showing him apparently being sworn in as president of Uganda hit social media and went viral.

Besigye was soon accosted, arrested and flown to the Northern part of Uganda.  He was jailed in the Moroto government prison.

Once word got out that Besigye was in Moroto, opposition supporters of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), swamped the prison to demand for his release.

A riot broke out in the cell where he was being held and one NRM prisoner was stomped to death.

Not soon after that, Besigye was airlifted from Moroto back to Kampala where the alleged crime had been committed. He had been charged in Moroto (court stood for a short time and after hours to slap treason charges on him).

On his next court appearance in the Nakawa court (just outside of Kampala), lawyers, family and friends had been barred from seeing him (same as what had been done in Moroto) and the security deployment was heavy.  The court session only lasted 10 minutes and started 30 minutes earlier than had been told his supporters.

Besigye was then remanded to the maximum security prison in Uganda, Luzira.

Many of his supporters have visited him and we have written articles about all this.

Besigye will be back in court today (Wed. June 1, 2016) to plead.

We shall bring you all the news as it happens when he gets taken to court.

One of Besigye’s lawyers is the Lord Mayor elect of Kampala, Erias Lukwago.  His swearing in coincides with Besigye’s court appearance and the visit of the Turkish president Erdogan to Uganda.  Lukwago’s swearing in has been postponed until next week.
