URA asks Oulanyah to debate taxation

The Deputy Speaker of Parliament has hailed the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) as one of the best performing government institutions as shown by the efforts to collect taxes and widen the tax base.

Rt. Hon. Jacob Oulanyah made these remarks while meeting the Commissioner General of Uganda Revenue Authority Ms. Doris Akol and other URA Commissioners during a courtesy call on him at Parliament.

He said that it would be a mistake for the public not to recognize the transformation of the Uganda Revenue Authority.
“It would be an act of dishonesty not to appreciate what the Authority has done. It is now a den of committed people who have given it a new image”, he said.

The Deputy Speaker advised the Commissioner General to make a mark and be felt in her new position, because as there was a lot of expectations of her from the public.
“You never get a second chance to make an impression. This is your time to do it. The first impression you make always that one that lasts”, he stressed.
He advised her to maintain the trust and confidence that has been bestowed upon her.

Ms. Doris Akol in her remarks called on the Parliament not to front politics when debating matters of taxation.
“Mr Speaker, I request that when there is debate on taxation, politics should be divorced. I know this is a tough call but we hope it does happen”, she echoed.

Akol also added that there is now increased education of the masses about taxation and its benefits.
“People do not get to know the good use of taxation and focus on misuse. There is a lot of positive things now happening in the country as a result of paying taxes”, she revealed.

In response to the issue of not politicizing taxation, the Deputy Speaker said that there can never be taxation without representation which is political.

He added that focus should be on the quality of the politics.
“You need laws as a tax body. URA is the best institution to demonstrate rule of law. We cannot do anything without a law”, he cautioned.
