A UPDF captain, also the Officer in Charge of the Military detach in Namalu sub-county, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for murder.
The third division court martial Wednesday sentenced Cpt Michael Walumbe for killing Moses Asio in Nakapiripirit in May 2016 during an operation to recover guns from cattle rustlers.
Walumbe reportedly tortured his victim to death and then kept his body in a grass thatched hut before burying it in the army detach.
Col Frank Kyayonkya, the 3rd division court martial chairman, convicted Walumbe and a junior officer, warrant officer John Mushabe [who remains at large] of murder contrary to section 188 and 189 of the penal Code Act.
As court handed him the sentence, Walumbe pleaded for leniency and apologized for making “a mistake”.
Walumbe also told that he is both HIV and Hepatitis B positive and has a big family of 16 children to look after.
The court martial chairman, however, stripped Walumbe of his ranks and dismissed him with disgrace from the army.
