UPDF soldier held for robbery

Crime murder

A UPDF soldier has been arrested on allegations that he aids thieves to stage road blocks and rob travellers in Mukono and Kayunga districts.

Private Kenneth Mugombesya is being held at Nagalama Police Station in Mukono district.

Kampala Metropolitan spokesperson Patrick Onyango says the soldier was arrested a week ago after staging roadblocks in Kalagi, Nakasajja and Namili.

The spokesperson of the Land Forces, Maj Stanley Malisaba said in a statement Friday that Mugombesya deserted the army in 2013.

He was attached to 29 Battalion currently deployed in Kotido [Karamoja sub-region] but went AWOL [Absent without Official Leave] for the first time on January, 25 2013 which ended on February 6, 2013.

On July 15, the same year, the same soldier was declared AWOL for the second time.

Maj Malisaba asked police to hand over the soldier to Military Police so he can answer charges of desertion.
