UPDF soldier charged for killing 8 civilians


Katwesigye appearing for trial

A Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) officer is on trial for shooting dead eight people including his wife.

Lance Corporal Moses Katwesigye appeared before the army court martial that sat at Kihihi Polytechnic Playground in Kihihi Town Council in Kanungu District for killing two soldiers; LCpl Saverio Byansi and Pte his wife Sarah Auma  in Kanungu on April 21.

Court chaired by Col. Geoffrey Mujuni also heard that LCpl Katwesigye who was attached to the 307 UPDF Brigade barracks at Mburamizi in Kihihi Town Council as nurse, shot and killed six other civilians.

He then escaped from the barracks with his riffle towards Kihihi Town Council while indiscriminately shooting at civilians along the way.

The soldier also injured three other people at the nearby Kiruruma trading centre out of rage before he handed himself over to police.

The killed civilians were identified as Maria Musiimenta, Medard Byamukama, Oliver Tindiwensi Tugumisirize, Apohia Kyosimire, Victory Gumoshabe,  and Shafi Ndahikire, all from Kiruruma Village in Kihihi Town Council.

Prosecutor in the case Lt. Kayita has 25 witnesses who are ready to testify against the soldier.

Deus Kamugisha, was presented today as the first witness in the case.
