UMEME has disconnected power supply to Wandegeya market over an accumulated bill worth Shillings 153 million.
Stephen Illungole, the Media Manager UMEME told URN on phone this morning that the company was prompted to disconnect power supply to the market after its management failed to respond to their calls to clear the accumulated bill.
He says the management of the market led by Jonathan Ggita and KCCA officials has since visited their offices to discuss how to clear the bill following the power discussion.
Illungole however, noted that UMEME can’t reverse its decision unless the power bill is cleared.
Jonathan Ggita, the chairman Wandegya Market says they are not opposed to the bill but wants UMEME to explain to them how the bill came about since they have been paying.
He says payment of such a colossal of money cannot just happen as required by UMEME because KCCA, which owns the market is an institution that is run by a number of officials.
According to UMEME receipts seen by URN, the Wandegeya market leadership has been paying between two and three million Shillings each month.
The disconnection of the power supply to market has hit hard several vendors.
Safi Banya, a dealer in Electronics says he has been out of business since power was disconnected to the market.
He appeals to the market leadership and KCCA to resolve the power problem expeditiously.
Abubakar Massa runs a secretarial bureau in Wandegeya market.
Massa says he has incurred a loss of up to Shillings 5 million as some of his clients have withdrawn their work citing lack of power.
