Ugandan dies while digging a latrine in Juba

A 25-year-old Ugandan national has been reported dead after a pit latrine he was digging caved in and buried him.

The deceased had reportedly been hired together with his brother to dig a four-metre deep pit latrine.

The Ugandan Community Representative in Juba, Joseph Waliggo said the deceased climbed down in the afternoon of Tuesday to draw out water, however when the walls caved in he was unable to climb out in time to escape.

The soils buried him alive.

The pit was reportedly for construction of a septic tank but due to these days’ heavy rains, the pit got filled with water and they lowered down the ladder to begin their work when death struck.

It has been four days since the rains begun in Juba making the soil wet and loose to easily collapse, the residents observed.

Remains of the deceased only identified as Emmanuel were dag out by his colleagues a day after his death with the help of locals and S. Sudan police.

Colleagues had failed to dig out his body until local police was called in for help.
