The five S’s of sports training and success for any National Team are: stamina, speed, strength, skill, and spirit; but the greatest motivator of all is allowances of players paid in time.
It is hard to believe this but’s its true. Our National Rugby team, travelled to Zimbabwe, last week for a Tier 1A Africa Rugby Championship with Contingency money of only Shs 500,000 (about $130) to cater for 28 players and officials.
The Team’s Travel and accommodation was fully catered for, by the International Rugby Board.
All the Uganda Rugby union had to do, was to pay player allowances. Players didn’t get any allowances but played their hearts out.
It took the union 8 months to clear allowances of the players after they won the Tier B tournament in Uganda last year, yet the collected millions at the gates.
It is also rumoured, that only 3 million shillings, was credited to the union account after the Uganda Vs Kenya match at legends grounds in June ,yet thousands attended.
We the fans, feel bad when our top players are silently crying out for help.
It’s time for them to speak out in the open.
We must avoid issues were players cant afford meals in transit and only feed on slices of bread and drink tap water.
Otherwise, good luck to the Rugby Cranes, as the take on Kenya this weekend in Nairobi.
