Butambala legislator Hon Muwanga Kivumbi has likened the current government to a monarchy where a King reigns until he dies.
Kivumbi suggested that even the current Members of Parliament can’t be exemplary given that they are products of the same “corrupt” system.
He said for example, it is the president who runs Parliament as a caucus and those who oppose are branded “rebels”.
“I’m under no obligation to support a party position that doesn’t benefit Uganda. That is not case for many NRM MPs. We need to liberate Parliament.”
According to him, the thing called Parliament is merely an extension of the executive and needs to be liberated.
He gave an example of Uganda Cranes that just qualified for African Cup of Nations saying if government had invested more in sports, the country wouldn’t have spent 38 years without qualifying.
“We lack a national infrastructure that captures talent. The government only comes out when individuals excel.”
Kivumbi said the Ugandan North American Association [UNAA] convention started out as a great event but when government stopped listening, organisers turned it into a get together.
“I have previously attended UNAA convention. My conclusion was that it is merely a holiday experience. Last time I was at UNAA, the biggest delegation was sponsored by government. Over 100 people! Where’s the accountability?”
Morrison Rwakakamba, a Special Presidential Assistant – Research and Information at Government of Uganda – Office of the President, concurs that there was no need for 70+ people to attend the convention.
