UCC to close Media houses Over Local Content

The government has vowed to take action on television and radio stations that fail to provide 70% local content in their broadcasts.

According to the Executive Director of Uganda Communications Commission Godfrey Mutabazi during the Annual General Meeting of the National Association of Broadcasters in Kampala, Mutabazi said they issued a directive in 2013 requiring televisions to prioritise local content over foreign material but most media houses have defied the order.

“We are set to embark on tough enforcement measures and those that do not comply will not have their licenses renewed.” said Mutabazi.

however, broadcasters have asked the government to invest in mass media campaigns if it is to effectively promote its programs.

The association chairman Kin Karisa says the government has often blamed the media for not publishing information on government projects.

He has thus called on government to borrow a leaf from telecom companies and set aside at least 2% of specific project budgets for media activities.
