State objects to Besigye bail in treason case  


Besigye in the dock

Opposition leader Kizza Besigye earlier arrived at High Court in Kampala for a ruling on his bail application.

Colonel Dr. Kizza Besigye entered the dock amid massive jubilation from supporters who filled the courtroom.

Security earlier deployed heavily and blocked all roads leading to High Court.

Budadiri West MP, Nathan Nandala Mafabi, Rukungiri Municipality MP, Roland Mugume, Maj Gen (Rtd) Mugisha Muntu and Rubaga Municipality Mayor, Joyce Ssebugwawo, Buhweju MP Francis Mwijukye were presented to court as Besigye’s sureties.

Presiding Judge, Masalu Musene, was forced to stop Dr Besigye’s lawyer, Ernest Kalibbala from presenting a 5th surety.

Kalibbala told court Besigye was seeking solace and refugee after claims that he is uncertain of when his treason trial will commence thus asking to be granted bail.

On grounds for bail, lawyer Kalibbala cited Besigye’s advanced age, the fact that he will to comply with bail terms, has a permanent place of aboard, uncertainty on treason trial commencement and that he has complied on previous occasions.

The state, however, objected to Dr. Besigye’s bail application saying bail is not automatic.

The state also demanded proof that Dr Besigye is 60 years old.

Kalibbala also assured court that Besigye will abide by all conditions set by court.
