Police in Mbarara has arrested three supporters of former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) presidential candidate Kizza Brsigye for allegedly vandalizing police vehicles.
The District Police Commander Japhar Magyezi said the three were arrested in a fracas between police and Besigye in which a police officer was injured.
Besigye was on his way to Kabale to attend court in a case in which he charged with inciting violence.
Besigye was in the company of Ingrid Turinawe, Elias Lukwago, Mubarak Munyagwa and Imam Makumbi, the Democratic Party Vice President for Western region, among others.
Mr Magyezi and the Rwizi Regional Police Commander Hilary Kulayige engaged Dr Besigye and Mr Lukwago who were waving to the onlookers lining the street. It is here that some people begun throwing stones at police, protesting halting of the procession.
According to Magyezi, windscreens of police vehicle were shattered and one officer who had reportedl;y gone to provide Besigye security injured.
“Their intention was not basically to stone the vehicle, they wanted to stone us, probably me who was on that vehicle; when my head dodged the stone, it our vehicle,” said Mr Magyezi adding that police will conduct detailed investigations into the whole fracas.
