The Last Chief of Teso dies aged100

The Iteso, are mourning the death of 100-year-old Eriya Aduutu Aide, the last surviving colonial administrator who served the British colonial administration as a Chief in Teso.

According to Enosi Osire a nephew, the deceased passed away in Mulago hospital on Friday evening, having retired from service in the early 1970s. He died of old age after his kidney shutdown, affecting functions of other internal organs.

“The local government asked him to serve on contract but he refused saying he did not want to die while serving government. They are the ones who prepared Uganda for independence so he  wanted to retire early,” he said adding that among his ambitions was concentrating his energy to develop his family but in the process, ended up acting as a consultant grooming most of the Iteso who have served as leaders in Teso he said on telephone yesterday.

According to him, the fallen chief started his career serving the colonial administration as a mail man (Matalisi) delivering correspondences between the British administrators before he was appointed to become a Parish chief. He rose through the ranks serving as sub county chief before he was finally appointed the county chief serving the counties of Katine, Kidongole, Bukedea and Kolir before Idi Amin dismantled the colonial administrative units upon when he retired.

Upon retirement, he decided to become apolitical because he believed all Iteso were his children and he needed to serve all of them equally which he could not if he chose to join party politics.

According to Mr. Osire, the fallen Chief will be laid to rest in Kakeere in Bukedea district on Wednesday next week together with the wife to one of his sons who died in UK two weeks ago.

In Teso, fallen chief is known for having mentored nearly all the indigenous leaders who have led the region since the 1970s as he was considered to be knowledgeable about the affairs of the region.

Asked if there are any more such chiefs surviving in Teso, Mr. Osire said there is none he is aware of but believes the late was the last one surviving since the rest are all fallen
