Parliament has approved the appointment of Hon. Ssekandi Edward Kiwanuka, Member of Parliament for Bukoto Central as the Vice President of Uganda.
280 Members of Parliament approved his appointment in a sitting of the House held Wednesday June 8, 2016.
Four Members voted against his appointment while nine abstained from the voting exercise conducted by the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga.
Article 108(2) of the Constitution provides that the President shall, with the approval of Parliament by a simple majority, appoint a Vice President.
The Government Chief Whip Hon. Nankabirwa Ruth who moved the Motion for the approval of the Vice President, described him as an experienced leader and seasoned lawyer who deserves to serve the nation as the Vice President.
The Democratic Party Whip and Kalungu West representative Hon. Ssewungu Joseph Gonzaga in seconding the approval Motion urged MPs to vote in favour of Ssekandi’s appointment for being an approachable leader who is always dedicated to his work.
He said Hon. Ssekandi had restored dignity in the office of Vice President during his tenure as the 9th Vice President from 2011 to 2016.
Opposition legislator Hon. Odonga Otto also heaped praise on Hon. Ssekandi whom he described as a simple and humble leader.
He however tasked him to implore the President to meet his pledges.
“The Presidential pledges currently stand at Ushs 11.6 trillion. Please use your office to ensure that all pledges are met. I also call on you to implore the President to unconditionally release Dr. Kiiza Besigye as part of the process to heal this country,” MP Otto said.
The Vice President in his acceptance speech pledged to continue serving all the people of Uganda without discrimination, and to always keep his word.
