Tears mixed with rage were witnessed at State House on Monday after a list of newly promoted UPDF soldiers was released.
The list released by the Chief of Defence Forces [CDF] Gen Katumba Wamala, says the promotions were made by the president, Gen Yoweri Museveni, also the commander-in-chief.
Sadly, one person was missing from that list and she could not stomach being let down by her bosses to that extent.
That person is Maj Edith Nakalema, the president’s private secretary.
As we gathered, Nakalema is very angry with her bosses for not forwarding her name for promotion.
Her colleagues at the highest office in the country were treated to dramatic scenes as the Major threw tantrums all over, cursing and crying out to whoever cared to listen.
“She made consecutive phone calls to the General Administrative Orders [GAO] last night to no avail,” the source said.
GOA is located at Bombo ministry of Defence/ Army headquarters.
According to the information, Nakalema expected to be elevated from Major to the prestigious rank of Colonel.
“I did everything the Commander told me,” she cried out.
Her commander Muhoozi Kainerugaba who heads the elite Special Forces Command [SFC] was promoted from the rank of Brigadier to Major General.
“I trained with Sabiiti [deputy SFC commander]. I should have been promoted too,” Nakalema pointed out in unequalled fury.
Col. Muzeeyi Sabiiti, Muhoozi’s deputy was promoted to the rank of Brigadier.
Others like Col. Charles Lutaaya was promoted to the rank of Brigadier, Maj. Gen. Joram Mugume promoted to the rank of Lt. General and Col. James Bugabe was promoted to the rank of Brigadier.
The struggle for “recognition”
Nakalema joined Special Forces in January 2014.
On joining SFC, she was quickly promoted to the rank of Major after allegedly distinguishing herself by reporting colleagues in the finance department to the commander.
One such victim was a one Capt Betty who Nakalema accused of “swinging bums [buttocks or hips] in the office” and “doing nothing”.
The Captain was immediately transferred from finance to auditing section.
Nakalema is also remembered for dismissing all President Museveni’s household staff including waiters and banana peelers a week after she was employed.
She had just been transferred from SFC to work as a typist in President Museveni’s office.
While at the president’s country home in Rwakitura, Nakalema sacked all staff for serving tea in her room instead of ensuring she takes it from wherever she was.
In August 2014, another member of staff, then Special Presidential Assistant for Communications, Sarah Kagingo, reported Maj Nakalema to police for assault and threatening violence.
The Inspector General of Police Kale Kayihura chose to protect the Major from the charges and ordered his juniors to shelve the file.
Who is Nakalema
RO 08654 Major Edith Nakalema is a soldier under Museveni’s SFG and a Private Secretary to Museveni.
She hails from Kashari in Mbarara District and is married to Major Jimmy Ansizua.
Though born decades after Uganda gained independence, she was awarded an Independence Medal.
When she was a Captain, she together with the First son’s wife Charlotte championed Mama Kazi – a scheme to enhance income of SFG soldiers whose commanding officer is the first son Maj Gen Muhoozi.
There has been several complaints from both military and civilian staff of State House over Nakalema’s high-handedness.
She also terminated the employment of civilian cooks before disgracefully chasing them from all State House installations including Rwakitura.
It is said that one of the tasks of Maj. Nakalema is to keep off ladies from getting close to Museveni as directed by the First Lady, Janet Kataaha Museveni.
Museveni’s inner security circle is manned by the most trusted soldiers, Nakalema being one of them.
