Tanzania Bongo Flava veteran rapper, Professor Jay, real name Joseph Haule, has been elected Member of Parliament for Mikumi constituency.
Jay run for the office during the concluded October Tanzania’s General Elections on a Chadema Party ticket.
He was declared yesterday among the parliamentary elections largely dominated by the ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi [CCM].
Jay becomes the second musician to cross to politics; another veteran rapper, Mr Sugu, has been the MP for Mbeya for the last five years.
Other celebrities contesting in this year’s elections include former model Wema Sepetu and Wanaume TMK’s manager Said Fella.
Elsewhere, Chadema’s MP candidate Bilago Samson won the Buyungu constituency which was under CCM for 23,041 votes, while CCM’s candidate minister Christopher Chiza got 22,934 votes, according to Kakonko’s District Executive Director, Jaina Msangi.
Chadema candidate for Monduli constituency, Julius Kalanga, emerged winner against CCM’s Namelok Sokoine.
CCM further won parliamentary seats in Lindi and Mkinga: Mkinga Dustan Kitandula (CCM) -21,623 (54.192%) Bakari Kassimu (CUF) 13,547 (34.43%) Recho Sadick (Chadema) – 3,789 (9.63%) Ali Pendeza Mwita (ACT- Wazalendo) – 402 (1%), Lindi Urban Hassan Seleman (CCM) – 20,733 Salum Barwan (CUF) – 8843.
CCM also swept votes in both Mbinga rural and urban constituencies: Martin Msuha (CCM) – 59,269 Benjamin Akitanda (Chadema) – 11,285, Ruvuma Mbinga Urban Sixtus Mapunda (CCM) – 28,364 Elfrem Millinga (NCCR) – 102.
