Police is investigating circumstances under which four Ugandan fishermen were killed at Ukerewe Island on Lake Victoria, in Muleba District of Tanzania.
Boy Kikambi, Isaiah Zziwa, Gerald Matovu, and Godfrey Ssemuwunga were reportedly killed on June 3 as Uganda celebrated national martyrs’ day.
According to police spokesperson Fred Enanga, the fishermen were six in total and sailing on two boats when they were ambushed by pangas and stick wielding pirates before four of their colleagues were killed.
Police further explained that the attackers jumped into the boat which was being used by four Ugandan fishermen, beat them up and threw them into the water.
However, Enanga explained that two of their colleagues; Vincent Kagwa and Denis Ssenkima who were sailing on a different boat managed to escape with minor injuries.
This comes barely a month after four Ugandan police men were attacked and killed by DR Congo soldiers as they responded to an illegal fishing incident reported at Kitebere Island in the border district of Ntoroko.
