The National Resistance Movement party (NRM) Electoral Commission chairman, Tanga Odoi, has threatened to declare the president’s office vacant if Yoweri Museveni doesn’t pick his nomination forms tomorrow, Friday.
Odoi said not even the president who doubles as the NRM chairman will be allowed to breach the party’s nomination process.
“The only unopposed aspirant who has shown interest in the Presidency (paid but not picked forms) is H.E Yoweri Museveni,” Odoi told journalists at Kyadondo NRM party headquarters on Thursday.
“If by tomorrow 6PM, President Museveni has not picked his forms in person, I will declare the position vacant,” Odoi meant every word.
NRM’s picking of expression of interest forms exercise ends Friday July 31, 2015.
Amama Mbabazi who is challenging Museveni for the top seat has not yet picked his forms.
Amama refused to pay the Shs 20m nomination fees saying it was illegal upon which Odoi denied him the forms.
However, NRM deputy spokesperson, Ofwono Opondo, told press that his boss, Museveni will surely pick his forms tomorrow without fail.
“We have received advance notice from the President that he will pick his forms at midday tomorrow,” Opondo said.
After tomorrow, the party will embark on the second phase of the return of Nomination forms.
Dates for return of nomination forms for Presidential, MPs, NRM National Leaders and Mayors will be done between 11th -20th August.
Independents remain Independent until the Law is changed.
“We will create another window for them and those interested in the new constituencies,” said Odoi.
NRM District Chairpersons are so far 169, LCV 283, Woman MPs 410 (Highest Eastern) and total MPs 1, 550 (highest Western, Eastern, Central and Region).
