Ssekandi fundraises Shs100m for Martyrs

About 100 million shillings was raised towards the ongoing works at Paimol Martyrs shrine in commemoration Daudi Okello and Jildo Irwa, in Palmol subcounty in Agago District.

According to the Archbishop of Gulu Diocese, John Baptist Odama, about 4 billion shillings is required to complete the facility that will include the main shrine and associated amenities at the site.

The works will cover safe drinking water, dormitories for pilgrims, sanitation facilities, a sitting facility for 10,000 people, a health centre and houses for the clergy.

The Vice President Edward Kiwanuka joined thousands of pilgrims at the annual October 20th commemoration martyrdom Daudi Okello and Jildo Irwa.

Speaking during the end of the pilgrimage at Wipolo, Muttu parish in Agago Disrict, the Vice President Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi said that Uganda continues to benefit from religious tourism exhibited by the strong faith of the martyrs like Daudi Okello and Jildo Irwa and others from other parts of the country.

He contributed 5 million shillings towards the construction works and pledged Government support to the vision of the church to make the place a befitting tourism site and where people come to worship God.

The Deputy Speaker of Parliament Jacob Oulanyah who also attended the event contributed 2 million shillings and pledged 8 others as works progress said that the pilgrimage commands respect and its name “wipolo” is befitting which means heaven and will promote unity among the people of the area.

Archbishop of Gulu Diocese, John Baptist Odama who led mass along other Bishops of Nebbi, Santos Wanook, of Moroto, Damiano Giulio, of Arua, Sabino Ochan Odoki, of Lira, Giuseppe Franzeli and a number of Priests.

The event was attended by other pilgrims from Democratic Republic of Congo, Germany, France, USA, Italy, Kenya, and South Sudan.
