SPLA holds Bentiu, attacks rebel Gen Koang

Col. Philip Aguer, spokesman of the SPLA-Juba forces, says that SPLA-IO attackers were repulsed in the northern part of Renk in South Sudan’s Upper Nile State.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, Aguer said the rebels were repulsed after attacking the army positions on Thursday morning.

Fighting was reported between the SPLA and rebel fighters at Duk Duk area.

SPLA-IO deputy spokesman, Dickson Gatluak Jock, said government forces violated the ceasefire by attacking their position in Um Dulouth in the northern part of Renk County on Wednesday afternoon.

“Our forces in Renk under command of CDR. Major General James Koang Chuol came under heavy attack this afternoon from Juba SPLA faction,” he said.

SPLA captures areas around Bentiu

Early this week, SPLA recaptured Nhialdiu County and other areas of Mayom County that were controlled by the armed opposition forces allied to Riek Machar.

William Bajuoc Bakuet, Unity State Security Advisor, said: “Mayom is now under full control of the government, so there is not any rebellion in the area. The rebels fled toward Jagei areas after they were defeated in fighting over the last two days.”

He said rebel forces fled toward Heglig area along the border with Sudan.

Khan Nien Yieh, Director General at the Unity State Ministry of Information, also reported the defeat of rebels in Guit and Nhialdiu Counties.

SPLA team meets Gen Olony in Malakal  

Meanwhile in Malakal, SPLA investigation team sent by Bilpham and headed by Lt. Gen. Garang Mabil met with SPLA Major-General Johnson Olony and representatives of the Shilluk community at Lelo on the west bank of the Nile in Shilluk territory, Radio Miraya reported.

Gen Olony, an SPLA commander from Shilluk, recently clashed with the Upper Nile State governor’s bodyguards.

The Shilluk king, Kwongo Dak Padiet, told the UN Radio, Miraya, that the he also met with displaced people under UN protection in Malakal, which is on the east bani.

He said Gen Olony had not rebelled as earlier reported.

“I have spoken to both sides and we have come to know that Olony and his forces have nothing to do with rebellion, so everybody is asked to go to his place,” the King said.

Gen Olony also told Miraya that: “I did not rebel. I will be in the government and if the government wants to kill me, I will not rebel.”
