The Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Rebecca Kadaga on Sunday 7th August, 2016 launched a Cancer Ward at Jinja Regional Referral Hospital.
Dr. Sophie Namasopo, the Director Jinja Referral Hospital said that the Cancer Ward is going to help many people in Busoga region since cancer is on the rise in the country.
“The Cancer Ward consists of the Palliative Care Unit, the Pediatrics and the Female Wards. We as a hospital can now admit some of the patients suspected of having cancer before more tests can be done,” she said.
The Cancer Ward was renovated by the Twegaite International organization based in the United States of America.
Speaking during the Launch of the Cancer Ward, Rt. Hon. Kadaga commended the good work Twegaite International was doing back at home helping the people of Busoga.
“We are grateful for your commitment as the Basoga from the diaspora because you have not forgotten your roots,” she said.
The Chairperson of Twegaite international Tony Isubikalu said that they are committed to making sure that they will do all things possible to give back to the community.
“This is the first faze of upgrading the Hospital, we are going to lobby and make more fundraising for any project that will help the Basoga,” he said.
Isubikalu added that among the things that Twegaite International did was donation beddings for the Cancer Ward.
Dr. Namasopo said that Jinja hospital also faces numerous challenges hindering its effective service delivery.
“The Hospital is currently facing a problem of electricity supply, which is unstable. We therefore request that Umeme gives us a direct line for the hospital to stabilize the power issue,” she said.
Dr. Namasopo added that the Hospital also faced challenges of staffing and currently the hospital staffing level is at 87%.
Among other challenges that the hospital faced was the housing of the staff whom the Dr. Namasopo said are residing in dilapidated buildings.
