Somali President formally receives AMISOM’s new Force Commander, Lt. General Soubagleh

The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia H.E Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has formally received the new Force Commander of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) Lt. General Osman Noor Soubagleh.

President Mohamud received Lt. Gen. Soubagleh today at the Presidential Palace in Mogadishu, Somalia where he was accompanied by a delegation of the senior leadership of AMISOM, led by the Special Representative of the African Union Commission Chairperson (SRCC) for Somalia and Head of AMISOM Ambassador Francisco Caetano Madeira.

While reassuring the AU Mission of his continued support, the President pointed out that security remained Somalia’s key priority and emphasized the need for adequate security arrangements, as the country prepares for legislative and presidential polls.

“A few years ago, we would not be talking about having elections, but here we are. The threat of Al-Shabaab however must be tackled conclusively. We must destroy the capacity of Al-Shabaab and for this to happen; we need to have the force enablers and multipliers deployed as a matter of urgency. The delivery of these has been pending for a long time now and it is a very critical element of the fight against Al-Shabaab,” President Mohamud said.

He asked for enhanced coordination between AMISOM and Somali National Security Institutions, for better execution of security operations.

Ambassador Madeira expressed confidence in the Force Commander’s ability to effectively lead security operations.
“General Soubagleh has worked with AMISOM before; he has extensive knowledge of the Somali culture, the language and more so, of his mandate here. He will use his experience to guide AMISOM operations, with the guidance and support of your government, towards peace and stability of the country,” noted Ambassador Madeira.

“Taking into account the current circumstances, his first assignment will be to ensure security of the elections, alongside the continued battle to ensure that Al-Shabaab is disrupted, degraded and destroyed.”

Also accompanying the Force Commander to the Presidential Palace was the Deputy AU Special Representative for Somalia Hon. Lydia Wanyoto and the Deputy Force Commander Major General Mohammedesha Zeyinu.

Lt. General Soubagleh arrived in Mogadishu on 18 July 2016, to officially take up office, following his appointment on 31 May 2016.
