Boxing legend Muhammad Ali, considering one of the greatest athletes in history, passed away on Friday at the age of 74. As you can imagine, there was no shortage of athletes honoring the legend, who was known as much for his in-ring dominance as his out-of-ring impact.
One of the sports stars to react on social media to his death was friend Pele, the Brazilian soccer legend who played for the New York Cosmos in the 1970s and became friends with the boxer. Below is what he said on Instagram:
“The sporting universe has just suffered a big loss. Muhammad Ali was my friend, my idol, my hero. We spent many moments together and always kept a good connection throughout the years. The sadness is overwhelming. I wish him peace with God. And I send love and strength to his family.”
Pele, 75, wrote that the sadness is ‘overwhelming,’ as it is for so many. What a touching tribute from one of the best athletes in history to another.
