State House speaks on Maj Nakalema ‘sacking’

Social media is awash with reports of the sacking of Maj Edith Nakalema, the president’s private secretary.

While her haters continue to jubilate and throw parties, State House tells us Nakalema is still their employee.

The report circulating on WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter claims that president Yoweri Museveni has fired Nakalema and sent her back to Entebbe, the Special Forces Command (SFC) barracks.

Nakalema who was last week ranked by NRM Poor Youth Forum as the most powerful person in Uganda, seems to be in bad books with most Ugandans.

The report alleged that she had been replaced with a certain colonel and would be re-deployed elsewhere as a regular soldier.

State House, SFC dismiss the report as false

We talked to the newly promoted presidential press secretary, Lindah Nabusayi, who dismissed the report.

“I am not aware of her re-deployment. We were working with her even last evening. We had an assignment,” Lindah explained.

She said Maj Nakalema had even escorted President Museveni to a function in Masindi district Monday morning.

“I am not aware of any other information,” she said referring us to Special Forces Command.

Major Chris Magezi, the spokesperson for Special Forces Command, told The Insider he was not aware of such a development.

“As far as I know that (sacking) is not true. I don’t have any information about her re-deployment. She is still in State House,” Maj Magezi told us.

Hussein Kashillingi, a legal assistant to President Yoweri Museveni, also dismissed the rumour as false.

Nakalema-the woman behind State House wrangles?

Inside information indicates that the president has received several complaints from the public, government officials and foreign envoys who accuse her of using abusive language.

Others even insinuate that her command of English is questionable to the extent that she never understands the president’s directives when given in the Whiteman’s language.

Nakalema, is the woman who Sarah Kagingo, former special presidential communications assistant, reported to police for threatening her life back in September 2014.

The Police Special Investigations Unit opened an investigation into a case of threatening violence and physical assault against Nakalema in relation to Jinja Road Police Station case No: SD 03/24/08/2014.

Filed on August 24, the file says while at State Lodge Nakasero on the sidelines of President’s meeting with some MPs from eastern Uganda, Nakalema pushed down Kagingo at the height of Museveni’s social media war.

In October 2014, in a lengthy statement, Kagingo said Nakalema kept assaulting, harassing and intimidating her and others with impunity but her employers failed to protect her.

“Why is Major Nakalema exempted from the UPDF code of conduct? Why is she allowed to harass everybody and create cliques of staff against others so they secure their jobs,” she wrote.

On November 1, 2014, Nakalema wrote on social media: “Brig. Nalweyiso and Nakyobe order the withdraw of Sarah Kagingo’s official car. Kayihura’s boys on the ground”, after announcing that Kagingo had been fired.

At the close of last month and before being fired, the current presidential advisor on Media, Tamale Mirundi, said Nakalema and Brig Proscovia Nalweyiso were co-leading a “gang of thieves” camped at State House.

The remarks were followed by his sacking and demotion.

On June 4, 2015, she wrote on social media: “Dividing our party is not allowed we follow the party constitution as stated. Uganda police force is to fail Rt Hon Amama Mbabazi during his country tours. We only have one sole candidate HE. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the national party chairman.”

Nakalema-the “angel”

In September 2014, Museveni attended a thanks-giving service for Mr. Eriyasafu Sserwadda and his wife Ms. Midrace Sserwadda of Rwentaanga Parish, Bubaare Sub-County in Kashaari County Mbarara district.

Mr. Eriyesafu Sseruwada a Parish Priest is the farther to the President’s Private Secretary, Maj Nakalema.

President Museveni, who was accompanied by his wife and Karamoja Aaffair Minister, Mrs. Janet Kataaha Museveni, reportedly lauded Maj Nakalema for “being an honest officer whose track record right from the time she joined the Uganda People’s Defense Force to date, has been excellent and outstanding”.

“He said it was for that reason the he appointed her his Private Secretary.”

Who is Nakalema

RO 08654 Major Edith Nakalema is a soldier under Museveni’s SFG and a Private Secretary to Museveni.

She hails from Kashari in Mbarara District and is married to Major Jimmy Ansizua.

Though born decades after Uganda gained independence, she was awarded an Independence Medal.

When she was a Captain, she together with the First son’s wife Charlotte championed Mama Kazi – a scheme to enhance income of SFG soldiers whose commanding officer is the first son Brig. Muhoozi.

There has been several complaints from both military and civilian staff of State House over Nakalema’s high-handedness.

She also terminated the employment of civilian cooks before disgracefully chasing them from all State House installations including Rwakitura.

It is said that one of the tasks of Maj. Nakalema is to keep off ladies from getting close to Museveni as directed by the First Lady, Janet Kataaha Museveni.

Museveni’s inner security circle is manned by the most trusted soldiers. Major Nakalema could be one of them.
