Isingiro District in western Ugandan has become the latest district to be hit by hunger just months after Uganda in June this year won world food prize for cambating hunger and malnutrition.
The World Food Prize is the most prominent global award for individuals whose breakthrough achievements alleviate hunger and promote global food security. This years 250,000 US Dollars prize was divided equally between the four recipients including Uganda.
However, latest reports indicate about two people have died of hunger in the western district while several others have been left homeless after selling part of their land to obtain money to feed their families.
Isingiro has for long been water-stressed, with residents suffering heavy losses in the form of animals and crops. Though it has rained in some districts, Isingiro has not had rains this year.
The district has a population of about 325,800 people, with the biggest percentage hardly accessing food and clean water.
As a result, the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party has launched a campaign to mobilize food and money for families hit by food shortage in various parts of the country.
The party is understood to have started mobilizing food and money from members here and in the diaspora for the cause, according to FDC’s deputy secretary General Harold Kaija.
