Several people are reported to have died in an accident that happened in Kampiringisa in Mpigi district along Masaka-Mbarara highway this evening.
Mpigi District police traffic officer Edith Nanteza confirmed the accident which involved two taxis, a private Noah and two trailer trucks.
Deputy police spokesperson Polly Namaye said preliminary reports had put the number of the dead at 17 victims in total.
Two more passengers died on arrival in the hospital.
The bodies of the dead and the injured were taken to Mulago and Mpigi hospitals respectively.
She said police later evacuated the injured from Mpigi health centre to Masaka referral hospital for further treatment.
According to Namaye, the Noah was overtaking a trailer and met another trailer.
The Noah hit the trailer and the trailer hit the taxis.
Namaye blamed the accident that happened at around 5:45 pm on reckless driving on the part of the Noah driver.
“It was a corner and risky to overtake in such a place. Investigations have started and we will be able to get the drivers who are involved,” Namaye told Insider on phone.
