Eng. Denis Sabiiti on Monday trounced State Minister for Economic Monitoring, Henry Banyenzaki, in NRM primaries for Rubanda West MP seat.
Eng. Sabiiti got 13,798 votes while Hon Banyenzaki came second with 11,874 votes, Moses Kamuntu Mwongyera with 5,363 votes, Mathias Muhereza with 2,264 votes, Abel Muhumuza with 494 votes, Dustan Kagoma with 436 votes and lastly Africano Byaruhanga with 334 votes.
Sabiiti defeated the minister with a huge difference of about 2,000 votes.
Sabiiti is a former commissioner of transport in the Ministry of Works and Transport.
Rubanda West polls were cancelled in October after NRM Kabale District Chairperson Maurice Keitaba learnt that over 16,000 ballot papers were missing.
Eng. Denis Sabiiti, Moses Kamuntu Mwongyera, Robert Muhereza Matthias, African Byarugaba Kikabeinika, and Rtd Corporal Abel Muhumuza Karegyesa, all petitioned the NRM electoral commission protesting the development.
Banyenzaki himself was reportedly found with 15,000 NRM pre-ticked ballot papers.
NRM supporters in the district had grown estranged with the minister over intimidation and brutal treatment of opponents.
In August, Banyenzaki ambushed Moses Nuwagaba, the former Kabale District Deputy RDC and snatched the official’s vehicle.
Not long after, he tried to kidnap the Kabale District Speaker, Twinomuhangi Pastori.
Reports from Kabale now show the minister will run as an independent in 2016 elections.
