A South African Prophet, Penuel Mnguni, who ordered his followers to eat a live snake in the belief it would turn into chocolate has been freed on $120 (£77) bail.
He was arrested following weekend reports of what he was doing in his End Times Disciples Ministries church in Pretoria.
The pastor appeared in a magistrate’s court outside the capital Pretoria Monday on a charge of cruelty to animals after being reported to the police by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
The preacher ordered members of his congregation to eat a live snake, with the promise that it would become chocolate it their mouths.
The African Christian Democratic Party condemned the behaviour of such self-styled prophets.
In May this year, Penuel hit the headlines after asking members to remove their clothes and then he would sit on them before praying for them.
He also asked congregants to drink petrol with the promise it would taste of pineapple juice.
