A top Rwandan diplomat is reported to have died in a Burundi prison.
Jacques Bihozagara, who served as a Rwandan ambassador to Belgium and France, died in Mpimba prison on Wednesday.
Bihozagara has been detained at the central prison of Bujumbura since last year.
He was accused of working for Kigali as a spy.
The diplomat denied the accusations saying he had gone to Bujumbura to trade.
SOS Media Burundi reports that the envoy was “fine this morning and had no health problems”.
He is one of the many Rwandans currently imprisoned in Burundi.
Last year, tensions between Rwanda and Burundi went high following reports that over 50 Rwandans were being held incommunicado by Burundian authorities on suspicion of espionage.
Bujumbura accused Kigali of supporting rebel groups planning to wage war against President Pierre Nkurunziza’s government, accusations that the Rwandan government has vehemently denied.
Diplomatic ties between Rwanda and Burundi worsened after Kigali expressed concern over the violence in the country.
