Rwanda curbs foreign travel for government officials

Rwandan president on Saturday ordered restrictions on foreign travel by government officials, signalling possible adoption of fiscal belt-tightening measures by the government.

Addressing the country’s annual National Leadership Retreat in the eastern city of Gabiro,Paul Kagame said that there has been waste of time and resources, especially through unnecessary foreign travels for officials.

When talking about the occasions that there were always several ministers absent from Cabinet meetings due to foreign trips, he said it must be stopped.

“I have decided to cut my losses,” he said, “This has been going on for long and it has to stop,” he added.
Kagame said he agrees with his Tanzanian counterpart John Magufuli who ordered restrictions on foreign travel for government officials soon after taking office.

With the attendance of about 250 leaders and officials, the three-day meeting was expected to discuss the country’s social reforms and development programs in the coming years. (Cihan/Xinhua)
