The Mayor of Rukungiri Municipality, Charles Makuru, has threatened the NRM Government to release their “son” Dr Warren Kiiza Besigye soon if they don’t want problems.
Makuru who did not outline the problems government would face was meeting residents of Kanyantorongo Sub County who had showed up at the party of Frank Bahira in the FDC stronghold of Kanungu district.
Makuru wondered why government was still holding Besigye yet they lost the 2016 presidential elections.
Besigye was recently sworn in dramatically as Uganda’s president.
He was quickly arrested and whisked to Moroto prison before being relocated to Luzira on remand till 1st June when he will be brought back to courts of law.
Makuru called absurd the continued holding of Besigye in custody yet he won the 18th Februaryelection.
According to Makuru, most people in Rukungiri are in despair following government intimidation and harassment.
He asked government to stop harassing the people it is mandated to protect.
Meanwhile, the event which was attended by the Kanungu business community and politicians turned into a political arena as leaders accused each other of leaders for hindering development in the district.
The parish preacher Rev Bernard Byamugisha said there was a need to emulate a man who fought for his country and built up a synagogue.
During the service, Kanungu based tycoon Musinguzi Garuga promised residents of Kanyantorongo a good school in the area.
He pledged Shs10m towards the construction of the church.
Byaruhanga Frank who represented the Business community contributed one hundred sacks of cement and asked residents to remain united.
At least Shs13m was collected both in pledges and cash during Bahira’s thanksgiving.
