The Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda has said the great strides taken by the European Union to integrate its people serves as a template of success which the East African community will emulate to unite East Africans economically and politically.
The Premier said the European Union (EU) was a long-time partner of Uganda and had contributed immensely to the socio-economic development of the country.
Dr Rugunda made the remarks during Europe day celebrations at the residence of the head of the European Union delegation to Uganda, Ambassador Schmidt at Kololo on Thursday.
“I wish to take this opportunity to convey warm congratulations and best wishes from the Government and people of Uganda to the European Union and its member states on the auspicious occasion when you celebrate the end of armed conflict and the shaping of a common future,” said Rugunda.
The Premier thanked the EU for development assistance to Uganda in areas such as road infrastructure, water and sanitation, education, health, poverty eradication and human rights.
He said Uganda was committed to facilitating investors from the European community to exploit the opportunities that exist in agriculture, tourism development, natural resource development and trade.
Rugunda also commended the EU for its commitment to supporting the pacification of Somalia, South Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo and other areas in the region.
The head of the European Union delegation to Uganda, Ambassador Kristian Schmidt said Europeans celebrate the vision of living together in peace through political cooperation, integrated economies and shared values.
“We Europeans applaud Africa rising. We see the shift from aid towards more trade and investment and we are part of it,” said Ambassador Schmidt.
He also paid tribute to those Ugandans who continue to risk their lives fighting to preserve peace and promote development in Somalia and South Sudan.
