Mwebesa was accompanied by the DPC and DISO when he desecrated the church in Bihanga Parish, Buhweju District, Mbarara Diocese.
The trio stormed the church last Friday and ordered everyone to disperse.
They then engaged in a scuffle with the parish priest, Rev. Fr. Baingana Kenneth.
“We cannot accept such defilement of our church. We demand for an immediate apology, Dr Gaston Ampe, Chairman, Archdiocese of Mbarara Development Association (AMDA), said in a statement.
“As you may all be aware by now, Bihanga Parishioners in Buhweju District, Mbarara Archdiocese, were on Friday, 30th January 2016, during their regular overnight prayers, invaded by the Buhweju District RDC, Mr. Moses Mwebesa, accompanied by the DPC and DISO, taking over the pulpit and ordering everyone to leave the place,” Ampe said.
He said the RDC was accusing the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Baingana for allegedly supporting a candidate who, in the RDC’s opinion, he shouldn’t have supported.
Ampe doesnot reveal the candidate the priest was supporting but the one he got attacked for not supporting is the NRM candidate, President Yoweri Museveni.
“As the Archdiocese of Mbarara Development Association (AMDA), we stand with our brethren, parishioners of Bihanga Parish and their Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Baingana Kenneth in condemning, in the strongest terms the actions of the RDC and his team that were totally uncalled for.”
Their actions amounted to defiling of the Mother Church, something that the church cannot just sit and ignore, said Ampe.
“We implore our Parishioners in Bihanga Parish to keep calm, desist from engaging in any form of violence as they seek redress from the concerned authorities.”
Mwebesa was transferred from Mbarara where he was a Deputy RDC last year.
