Prince David Kijanangoma, a member of Tooro royal family has declared himself ‘King’ of Tooro.

He said he would oust King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV from the main palace in Harukoto within a period of two months and requested the Batooro to rally behind him in a pursuit for change in the kingdom.

Kijanangoma made the declaration during a function attended by a mammoth crowd at his palace in Rwengoma, Fort Portal last evening.

The function was graced by senior members of the Tooro royal family, among them Prince Sweeney Kaijamurubi, the only surviving child of Omukama David Kyebambe Kasagama, the tenth Omukama of Tooro and eldest son of Rukirabasaija Nyaika Mukabirere Olimi II.

Kijanangoma emerged from the palace dressed in the traditional cloth, the Kanzu, and waved to the guests at around 6; 30 pm.

He then took his place amid cheers and ululations.

They chanted “Hangiriza! Hangiriza Omukama” or “Hail to the King!” and they prostrated and knelt before of him.

The guests were entertained by the Amakondere dance, which is only performed in the presence of the King.

Shs 5 million Shillings was also raised for the renovation of the palace and upkeep for the Prince.

“From today onwards I am the King of Tooro. I will in two months’ time walk from Rwengoma to the Kingdom palace and take over the leadership of Tooro Kingdom,” Kijanangoma said amidst cheers from the guests.

He added that King Oyo has failed to steer the kingdom and has no option left but to relinquish the throne.

Kijanangoma added that after ousting King Oyo, he will ensure that all kingdom property that had been illegally sold will be returned.

He also pledged to renovate the Kingdom headquarters and the royal tombs, which are in a sorry state.

The Rwengoma function coincided with another one at the main palace, where King Oyo was meeting a section of members of the royal family.

In a telephone interview, Charles Kamurasi, the head of the royal family accused Prince Kijanangoma and some members of the royal family for disrespecting King Oyo.

He said that it was wrong for Kijanangoma to organize a parallel function for the day.

He also said that the Kingdom is prepared to protect King Oyo from enemies.
