The Office of the Leader of the Opposition (LOP) on Wednesday 15th June 2016 peacefully been handed over by Hon. Wafula Oguttu to Hon. Winnie Kiiza (Kasese district).
The outgoing Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Wafula Oguttu, said he was glad hand over office peacefully.
“I was honoured to lead a team as the LOP. My role at the time was to bridge the gaps that were there. I advise my dear sister that MPs are challenging to handle; a bag of ice for your head will be necessary, for it is not an easy task,” he said.
Wafula Oguttu further noted that among the achievements during his tenure, the LOP’s office had grown from three officers in Hon. Nandala-Mafabi’s time to 11 permanent staff, 12 support staff and was soon to be upgraded to a Department with a budget of Ugshs 2 billion.
“Madam LOP, you will be in charge of seeing that the funds are well utilized,” he said.
He also handed over the staff of the office led by Mrs. Ruth Byoona, the Assistant Director of whom he was very proud.
“Ruth is a very good person; she is strict, disciplined especially with finances. She is a good team player and I would recommend that you work with her as one of the best civil servants,” he added.
The new LOP Hon. Kiiza while making her remarks, was grateful for the opportunity given to her to lead a great team and promised to make milestones.
“As members of the alternative government we shall be handing over various offices, this is a virtue that we want to show the powers that be, that power can be transferred peacefully from one member to another,” she said.
The Party also formally introduced the new Opposition Whip, Hon. Ssemujju Ibrahim Nganda (Kira Municipality), a position formerly held by Hon. Cecilia Atim Ogwal (Dokolo district).
In her handover remarks, Hon. Cecilia Ogwal thanked the outgoing LOP leadership evidenced by the unity and success that has been registered in the office.
“You are a wonderful person and the success is due to your leadership style which I appreciate a lot,” she told Hon. Wafula Ogutu.
“For the first time a Private Members Bill; the Children’s Amendment Bill, was tabled by a Member of the Opposition, it was discussed and passed in the House. This is a great achievement,” Cecilia Ogwal concluded.
