A black police van tailed opposition leader Kizza Besigye on Saturday all the way from Kasangati in Wakiso district to Fort Portal town in Kabarole district.
According to Makerere university LCV Councillor, Doreen Nyanjura, the notorious van that usually whisks herself, secretary for mobilisation Ingrid Turinawe and Besigye to various police stations, chased the vehicle in which the opposition leader was travelling from hundreds of miles.
The van, which Ingrid and Nanjura call a “mobile torture chamber”, apparently raced after Besigye up to Mityana, Kyaka, Kyenjojo until he entered Fort portal town.
“He can’t breathe,” Nyanjura said.
Forum for Democratic Change secretary general, Harold Kaija, on the other hand, wondered “if the ruling NRM and President Yoweri Museveni know the kind of crisis we are in”.
He said police is spending tax payers’ money on fuel to follow three “harmless Ugandans” going to Fort Portal.
According to him, the money spent on the police van should be used to buy relief food for starving people.
“HE. Dr. Wrn Kizza-Besigye, yours truly and Comrade Fred Kato driving us are moving like VIPs without demanding for the status.”
A week ago, FDC accused police chief Kale Kayihura of “upping his surveillance game against Besigye and personally taken command of all monitoring operations against the indefatigable people’s leader”.
Besigye was picked from his residence and rushed to Naggalama police station in Mukono where he was detained for reportedly asking police to leave his home.
After he was released, Besigye travelled to Kampala city to make a transaction at Crane bank but was followed by the same black police van.
Kayihura too allegedly trailed Besigye, commanding and monitoring the conduct of his officers that are accused of building a reputation of misconduct.
He was spotted seated in a vehicle bearing police registration number plates with no escort as he repeatedly talked on phone.
