Uganda police force has asked presidential aspirant to officially lodge a report with them considering a plot to assassinate him during the countrywide consultative meetings.
Mbabazi campaign team told Insider yesterday that they were concerned over his safety in light of the recent events.
The team said the plot was hatched to kill him in eastern Uganda by crime preventers.
“It has come to our attention that a gang of hooligans in the guise of being “crime preventers” have been deployed in Jinja,” Josephine Mayanja-Nkangi Director Communications & Public Relations Amama Mbabazi Campaign, said earlier in the day.
This was supported by Mbabazi’s lawyers
The same document is signed by Fred Muwema and Twinobusingye Severino who also expressed similar concerns.
Police deputy spokesperson, Polly Namaye, says they have not received such a report or a copy of Amama’s statement alleging such.
“The only report we got a few months ago was from his wife who claimed there was a plot to kill their children and we are investigating that,” Namaye told Daily Monitor.
Yet his team insists crime preventers had been hired in Jinja and Iganga with “specific instructions to do everything necessary to not only disrupt Amama’s meetings but also to maim, injure or kill him”.
“We are appalled at the extent to which some people are willing to go to deny Amama the right to consult and the people of Uganda the right be consulted,” continued their statement.
The team said they were mindful of the fact that it is the role of the police and security agencies to protect Amama, his team and the people of Jinja.
“Equally, it is their role to protect and preserve the peace.”
Namaye called upon Amama to identify the individual crime preventers in the plot so police can commence investigations.
While in Jinja yesterday, Amama’s bodyguard only identified as Kule was shot in the leg by police and hospitalised.
His head of security team a one Aine was brutally arrested amidst clouds of teargas and whisked off to detention.
Mbabazi’s vehicle too was rammed by a police mamba and damaged as the police tried to drag him out of Jinja town back to Kampala.
Despite being peaceful, Mbabazi’s supporters were teargassed thrice by police commanded by the Jinja Regional Police Commander Kiira region, SP Edison Nyabongo.
Nyabongo sought to block all meetings until later in the evening when Amama was allowed to address his coordinators at Nile Village hotel having his two hotel venues cancelled earlier.
