Police shoots 3 dead in Amuru land protest

Three people are said to have been shot dead as police clashed with protesters in Apaa village in Amuru district.

This is the same spot where women undressed and protested naked in front of Lands minister, Daudi Migereko, and Internal Affairs minister, Gen Aronda Nyakairima.

Yesterday, business came to a standstill at Pabbo as police poured teargas on civilians in a bid to break the demonstration.

Shops closed down as villagers swore to do everything possible to protect their land from being “grabbed”.

Government says it is only demarcating the land but it came to the attention of villagers that Apaa and is being given to an investor.

The area was cordoned off by a combined force of Police and UPDF soldiers.

Reports say 16 of the protesters were shot with live bullets.

The injured were rushed to Amuru health centre for treatment.

Currently, 8 of them are in a critical condition while three are reported to have passed on.

On the same day, Kilak County Member of Parliament, Gilbert Olanya, was arrested together with three journalists from Parabongo, Lamogi sub county en route to Amuru district.

The journalists are; Alex Otto of Uganda Radio Network, Arnest Tumwesigye of Vision Group and Julius Ocungi of Daily Monitor.

Hon Olanya and group were rushed to Bobi police post and detained.
