Police raid FDC office in Mbarara and arrests 15 members

Police in Mbarara town on Tuesday arrested 15 Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) supporters in a raid on the party offices.

Those arrested include, Rwabutera Tubezara, an FDC candidate for Nyakayojo division, in the district council, Vicent Musime and Yassini Matsiko. More arrests are still going on in the town.

The arrests come a day before council elections slated for Wednesday (February 24).

Mbarara District Police Commander Jaffar Magyezi, without giving more details said the arrests followed intelligence that the group was planning to carry out an attack in Mbarara town, beating up people and vandalizing property.

According to police intelligence, the FDC group’s plan reportedly involved the use of fire arms.

Magyezi told the media that 30 other FDC supporters had earlier on been picked by police from lodges near the party offices.

He added that seven of the arrested are refugees from the Nakivale settlement camp and the rest are FDC supporters in Mbarara and Rukungiri districts.

But FDC party officials have termed police arrests as persecution by police and state machinery under President Yoweri Museveni government.
