Police informant arrested among kifeesi gang
A police informant has been arrested in the operation to round up members of the notorious kifeesi that has been terrorizing residents in and around Kampala.
Yahaya Kafumbe, a crime preventer coordinator for Salaama parish in Makindye division was arrested for allegedly beating someone and stealing a watch.
The arrest was conducted during a rectification campaign meeting at Makindye police between police and local leaders.
Kafumbe had also attended the meeting chaired by the head of the campaign team, assistant Inspector General Police, Yiga Fred.
His luck ran out when he wanted to front his queries, but was instead confronted by one of the youth, who accused him of beating him and stealing his watch, pointing at the watch Kafumbe had on his wrist.
The accusations came in shortly after many LC1 leaders and councilors had raised concern over the misconduct of crime preventers in the area.
However, this annoyed Yiga and immediately ordered for Kafumbe’s arrest and detention by the Katwe Division Police Commander, Mission Samuel.
Recently police said more than 100 officers were under investigation for alleged involvement in criminal activities.
Last month, Mr Fortunate Habyara, the Commandant of Professional Standards Unit (PSU) said the officers under probe reportedly connive with criminal gangs that terrorise people in the Kampala metropolitan and its surrounding areas.
