Uganda Police Force has failed to account for Shs16 billion of Shs30 billion reflected in the Auditor General’s report meant to pay utility bill arrears.
As a result , Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has ordered the office of the Auditor General to conduct a forensic audit of the Force’s financial records particularly the accumulated arrears.
The directive by PAC chairperson Angeline Osegge on Friday followed a fruitless engagement with the Police top officials led by the undersecretary Rogers Muhiirwa.
The other officers in the meeting included director for planning Edward Ochom and Spokesperson Andrew Kaweesi among others.
The Police fficers had appeared before the committee to answer audit queries raised by Auditor General John Muwanga in his 2014/2015 report in which he cited an outstanding bill of Shs16.4 billion payables accumulated by police.
According to Muwanga, the police force management continued to accumulate arrears without establishing mechanisms to monitor and control them.
In their defence, Muhiirwa told PAC that the Force only receives 45 percent of the required budget.
