Police is heavily deployed at Makerere University to contain a violent strike by students who are demonstrating over suspension of their colleagues and lack of lectures following a sit down strike by their lecturers.
Makerere University vice chancellor Prof John Ddumba Ssentamu on Tuesday suspended 15 students for allegedly vandalizing kitchen property.
The said property was vandalized during a students’ strike over poor quality meals served in Mary Stuart Hall.
“It has been brought to my attention that on the evening of October 19, 2016 at or about 6:30pm, you….a resident of Lumumba hall, incited students and invaded Mary Stuart kitchen serving counter.
You destroyed property including; chairs, cups and plates…..” Prof Ddumba’s statement read in part.
The students are said to have carried food from the serving counter and poured it at the entrance to Mary Stuart Hall, contrary to rules and regulations B(9) and 9(1 a) that govern the institution.
However, their colleagues are up in arms asking the suspended students to be reinstated.
The students also want their lecturers to go back to class after they laid down their tools starting last night on claims that they haven’t been paid their incentive arrears for eight months.
